The Hollywood Reporter's reviewer Michael Rechtshaffen described the film as "an origins story that represented a return to the saga's more humble, original space Western roots which emphasized character development over kinetic, adrenaline-fueled action sequences." He also praised Alden Ehrenreich's performance as Han Solo and Ron Howard's directorship.[89] The Guardian's reviewer Peter Bradshaw described Solo as a "boisterous bromance," awarding the film four out of five stars. When "Solo" starts, the dice are passed between the two of them, but we don't learn where they came from. Maybe that story is for another "Solo" movie. If we had to guess, something probably eventually happens to Qi'ra and the dice hang in the Millennium Falcon as a reminder of his lost love.
The Star Wars saga experienced what felt like a return to Earth when Solo: A Star Wars Story opened to underwhelming box office figures in May 2018. Critical responses to the story of Han Solo's early years were solid but muted, and after the monster success of the previous three movies, Solo was a palpable step down. Plans for similar movies got scrapped, and while the franchise has moved forward since then, its path is less clear than it once was. More importantly, this is where the dilemma with the tenth installment to the franchise starts to become apparent.
