The Vikings and Rus' were distinct peoples, but they shared a cultural identity and they were closely connected. This connection has been explained in terms of either an early common heritage or an overlapping of populations. The first hypothesis is based on the Viking raids on Russian settlements that occurred in various parts of the country during the 9th to the 12th centuries.[1] This connection was also reflected by the growing cultural influence of the Scandinavians in the region. The second theory is based on the fact that the Rus' trace their origin from the Norse Vikings as shown by the numerous runic inscriptions found in their territories and by the importance of the Scandinavian culture in the Rus' lands from at least the middle of the 10th century. The connection is also reflected in the fact that the earliest mention of the rus' name in a Scandinavian source is when the Swedes and Norwegians claimed to be Rus' in the late 11th century.
During the later part of the 10th century the movement westwards, following the middle Dnieper, brought new groups of Slavs into the Dnieper basin. This is the area where the Rus' territory was first formed and where the cultural influence of the Scandinavians was strongest. After the fall of the Western Empire in 962, the Roman Empire lost its frontiers in the east, and by the end of the 10th century it had all but ceased to exist.[41] This meant the end of the last westward movement of the Slavs and the beginning of the eastward movement, when the Kalmyks and Volga Bulgars moved into the area and reorganized the tribes of the steppe to the east of the Dnieper.[1][page needed] At the end of the 12th century the area was occupied by a Slavic state, the Principality of Chernigov, which was a part of Kievan Rus' until 1240, when it declared its independence.[42] Novgorod, based in the northern part of the Volkhov region, was a leading city of the Rus', and after the fall of Kiev in 1223 the town became the new capital of a vast territory stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.[43] The area experienced some of the most turbulent times during the Middle Ages, and after 1240 the majority of the inhabitants of this area were of mixed Slavic and Germanic origin.[44]
