It installed the slightly-older Windows Update Agent (7.4.7600.226). I ran WinUpdate using that agent, which successfully installed the new agent (7.6.7600.256). After that, it successfully searched for updates (49 of 'em to download), and is installing them now.
The last successful update of any kind was two days ago, when I tried to manually install a "Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)" that was supposed to fix the problem. I have tried various workarounds from online, with no luck yet. The microsoft help pages provide no working answers yet that I've found. There is no manual download for this update, which is frustrating when it cannot download or install itself, nor allow me up update anything else. I have network access, that has not been a problem (I'm posting this from this machine right now). I have run multiple virus and malware scans and have found nothing.
Good luck with the updater. Because of the time that it took through update failures, it was one of the most annoying computer problems that I have ever had. As I was attempting to go through some of the suggestions, I realized my hard drive was having issues, so I backed up data, removed old hard drive and reinstalled windows. When I did that, I went through all the updates and it even went through the Windows Updater without a hitch.

In my case, corruption in the Windows Update database was found and fixed. After that, it remains to restart the computer and try to scan for updates. If updates are not downloaded or installed, proceed to the next step.
