Before the Singer Tower was constructed, residents of the area shopped in New York City for everything: clothing, shoes, furniture, and foods. This changed when the Singer Building opened in 1904. Servants and delivery boys could no longer carry articles from store to store; now customers had to carry their purchases from the new building on Third Avenue. The burden was especially painful on women; the ability to carry heavy shopping bags was a precondition for a successful career, and the Singer Building would essentially relegate women to careers as homemakers in the tough new world of commerce.[107][108]
In the early 20th century, American culture was dominated by pop culture—artists such as Mozart, Beethoven, Shakespeare, and Picasso were popular among the masses.[103][104][155] Music was the most popular form of entertainment, and the Singers were leaders in that realm. To demonstrate this, they sponsored many music concerts in New York City.[96][156] These offerings resulted in large crowds marching through their building in search of free food and drinks, and sometimes their concerts were interrupted by mobs of unruly fans and sell-outs.[156][158] The company had to hire extra guards to keep order.[159] By the mid-1910s, the Singers were one of the best-known music companies.[160]
Eventually, building tenants began complaining that they were annoyed by the noise and proliferation of bootblacks on the streets.[59] Singer argued that the bootblacks should be let off the job because their regular store was within one-quarter of a block.[161] In 1910, Singer hired an executive known as the "bootblack king" to lead a campaign of "bootblack extermination."[162] His campaign was successful, and by 1914 more than 150 bootblacks had been arrested in three major raids.[163] As a result, bootblacking was outlawed in New York within three years, making New York the first major city to take such action.[9][164] Crowds of spectators cheered the bootblack king during the raids.[165] d2c66b5586
