Michael Winner kicked off the Death Wish film series (of which he directed the first three movies) with this 1974 actioner, based on Brian Garfield's 1972 novel. Charles Bronson stars as Paul Kersey, a pacifist architect who transforms into a ruthless vigilante when his wife is murdered and his daughter is raped in a home invasion.
Christopher Nolan got his breakthrough with his second feature, 2001's trippy revenge thriller Memento. Guy Pearce stars as Leonard, a man trying to avenge his wife's death by tracking down her killer. His lack of short-term memory, for which he compensates with tattoos and photographs, informs the film's nonlinear narrative structure. Alternating between the beginning of the story, shown chronologically, and the latter half, presented in reverse, the two narrative threads meet at the end, filling in each other's gaps and solving the final mystery.
Steven Spielberg's Munich, based on George Jonas' aptly-titled nonfiction book Vengeance, tells the true story of the Israeli government's secret revenge mission following the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics, in which 11 Israeli athletes were killed by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September. Eric Bana stars as the leader of the mission, Avner, in the film, which received five Oscar nominations.
After the rape, Jennifer flees outside, naked from the waist down, trying to get away from her attackers. However, they quickly catch up to her and continue to harass her. They then drag her down to the river where one of the men, Andy, pushes her head into a puddle, while Storch anally rapes her, claiming he enjoys that more. For the next minutes she is stripped naked and repeatedly raped by the men, both vaginally and orally (by Johnny) and eventually passes out. The whole ordeal is filmed by Stanley. When Jennifer wakes back up, she is completely stillfaced and wanders away without any sign of direction, while the men laugh at her and closely follow behind. When they reach an old bridge, Storch gets ready to kill her with his shotgun, but she lets herself fall into the river below. Despite the sheriff's attempts to shoot her, she is disappeared.
During the weeks that followed, she was rather pleased with her actions. Her plans backfired however slightly when the police suspected Oscar, the only male attendee to the self-help group, whose daughter committed suicide, after her rapist went unpunished. Oscar had threatened to kill Ron the way he died. There was however no evidence to convict Oscar and he went free. Trying to make things up with him, Jennifer went to talk with him. During the conversation, she was able to uncover the name of his daughter's rapist. With this knowledge, she went after the guy, stalking him into an alley. Here he revealed to be aware of her following him. Commanding an explanation, she tried to seduce him as well, before cutting him with a knife, trying to tase him. This failed however, as he was able to fight her off without a problem. Angered by her attempt to tase him, he cut open her dress and tried to rape her, only to stopped by the police. He was killed for attacking the cops... At the police station, she was exposed to be Jennifer Hills and not Angela, the name she used. During her interrogation, she was confronted by the fact that the disappearances of the sheriff and his croonies haven't gone unnoticed. But just as the net started to close around her, Oscar walked into the police station. Having slit his wrists, he confessed to have murdered Ron and Nicholas, before dying from exsanguination.
For the attempt on Chief's life, she was sentenced to two years in jail. It was revealed by her therapist in jail, the same that treated her before, that she has been into a couple of fights in prison, something that doesn't seem to bother. When she left the therapist's office, she chanced the name board, so it spelled \"the rapist\". In the hallway, she was attacked by two other prisoners who tried to stab her but whom she dealt with quickly before, killing the therapist as well.
Jennifer has no special powers or abilities. After being raped multiple times and almost killed by her rapists, she found new power however and for the month after her rape, she has shown herself to be able to make complex plans and can be very cunning when it comes to revenge. She was able to manipulate Matthew in trusting her, even as the boy knew what they done. She also convinced Mrs. Storch that she was her daughter's English teacher and was able to convince her to be allow her to go to the park with the girl. Later, she would trick Ron into believing she was an underaged girl and coerced him into having sex with her, before stunning him.
Jennifer used to be a carefree and a little bit clumsy young woman. But everything changed when she was raped by Sheriff Storch and his cronies, before trying to kill her. The experience traumatized her and chanced her view on life. She believed that nothing is done without reason and that everyone has motives for their actions. She saw the world in all black, stating that there are only two group of people, preys and predators. And ever since her rape, she made the clear decision to be the latter. Her inability to trust people led her to only assume the worse and bond hardly with people. The rape also led her to adopt \"an eye for an eye\" approach to justice. She killed her rapists in ways that reflected the treatment she received from them during her rape, re-enacting their actions, only with a role-reversal and a deadlier outcome. This behavior continued when she started confronting rapists who made other women victims. She has shown to be very sadistic and sickly when it comes to executing those she deems to be guilty. She was also willing to go through great lengths to get revenge and was willing to risk her life for it. Her shattered mind also led her to have violent fantasies, which she can't always distinguish from reality.
(PaPa, FRFR, Ab, C, LLL, VVV, SSS, NN, AA, DD, MM) Buddhist and other eastern religions espoused and hate-driven revenge sets tone, with one anti-Christian slam as rapist is wearing a cross, yet one rebuke of cursing in God's house where murder just took place; excessive language includes at least 50 obscenities and 17 profanities; violence is extremely excessive with sword-fighting, heads and limbs flying, numerous shots of violently spurting blood, eyeballs exploding, hatchets in heads, swinging, iron death ball on chain, rape, multiple beatings, chokings, etc.; sex includes attempted rape scene of woman in hospital, vulgar sexual dialogue, and discussion of and allusion to pedophilia; partially obscured upper female nudity; alcohol use; smoking; and, murder in front of a child, a child kills a pedophile, rape, lying, stealing, cheating, and revenge.
Audience: Older teenagers and adultsREVIEWER: Lisa A. RiceIn KILL BILL - VOL. 1, \"The Bride,\" played by Uma Thurman, is a female assassin in this fourth film venture by Quentin Tarantino, director of the acclaimed movie PULP FICTION. The pregnant bride is attacked on her wedding day by her betraying group leader and boss, Bill (David Carradine), whose team leaves her and the wedding guests for dead. Unknown to the assassins, however, \"The Bride\" survives the brutal attack but lies in a coma for four years, apparently losing her unborn child in the process. After being repeatedly raped, she wakes up from her coma, remembers everything about her assassins and seeks bloody revenge. Her plan is to re-learn to walk, (which takes 13 hours), then locate and eliminate every member of the betraying assassin team, leaving Bill for last. The pulp fiction KILL BILL is told in chapter format, making the narrative flow more like a book than a film. Tarantino shot the movie with edgy black and white sequences, and has included various music styles such as classical, country, and flamenco music - playing eerily over brutal scenes of violence. Limbs and heads fly in sword-fights, and blood squirts like a hose from numerous screaming, dying victims. The movie switches to Japanese anime to set up the audience for the second half of the film, which takes place in Japan. The film ends with a cliffhanger because Miramax took a 3-hour movie and split it into two 92-minute volumes. KILL BILL - VOL. 2 is slated for release in February, 2004. Apparently, the second movie will delve into \"The Bride's\" husband, the baby she was carrying, how she was found after going into hiding, and her relationship with the evil head assassin, Bill.KILL BILL is a gory, disgusting, over-the-top, violent comic book film about hate-and-anger-driven revenge. Moral audiences that might accidentally stumble into this movie will need to take a bath immediately afterwards - to cleanse the heart and mind of the graphic images of rape and every type of violence. The worldview espouses Buddhism and other false eastern religions, as the sword master makes comments that not even the Lord, Buddha himself, would survive a fight with an opponent who used his unique sword. There is one anti-Christian slam as the rapist is wearing a cross around his neck. There is also a scene where a policeman reprimands his son for swearing in the house of God, a small church where multiple murders of a wedding party just took place. The tone of KILL BILL falls into a trend of recent dark, depressing, and brutal movies. It's like CHARLIE'S ANGELS on steroids, portraying angry, revenge-laden, sexy women who bear no resemblance to the wise, kind, and compassionate wives and mothers of so many movies and TV shows prior to this decade. Though movies like these are intentionally campy, they do leave a perverted, ungodly impression of angry, dangerous women in the minds of our vulnerable sons who will be drawn to the action of Tarentino's films.Apparently, the KILL BILL movies are designed to be an extensive homage to the martial arts movies, Japanese gangster movies, adult Japanese cartoons, and spaghetti westerns that Tarantino loves. Volume One contains some brief, powerful moments from Uma Thurman regarding the physical and emotional brutality inflicted on her character and some interesting scenes between her and the samurai sword maker played by Sonny Chuba, whose ultra-violent STREETFIGHTER movies influenced Tarantino. For most of the running time, however, Thurman's character remains a non-entity. In fact, the rest of the movie is a wretched exercise in excess that neglects elemental story and character devices that help audiences identify with the protagonist. This is not something that truly great action movies have. If Tarantino were truly the cinema aficionado he claims to be, he would not have forgotten these basic facts of good storytelling. Please address your comments to:Bob & Harvey WeinsteinCo-ChairmenMiramax Films8439 Sunset Blvd.West Hollywood, CA 90069Phone: (323) 822-4100Website: www.miramax.com 153554b96e
