Pilonidal (meaning nest of hair) cysts or abscesses occur around the coccyx, just above the crack of the buttocks. They are usually caused by repetitive friction on the area but may begin with too much sitting, trauma or excessive sweating. Under these conditions, a hair follicle can become infected causing an abscess or boil, leading to a tract or small channel from the source of infection to the surface of the skin.

Jock itch (or tinea cruris) usually causes redness, flakiness, peeling, or cracking of the skin in the groin, thigh, and buttocks area. The rash can look circular, with well-defined or even elevated edges. It can also spread to the area around the anus (where poop comes out). It may itch, sting, or burn, or simply feel uncomfortable.

The buttocks, thighs, and upper arms are the three best sites, respectively, for intramuscular injection. The best is in the deltoid, the muscle on your upper, outer arm where your shoulder and your arm meet. If injecting into the butt, mentally divide each cheek into four equal sections and inject into the top right or top left outer section of each cheek. You can also use the front surface of your thighs about six inches above your knee to about six inches below your hip, or the outer surfaces of your upper arms between your shoulder and your elbow.
